Why some cats seem so picky
Cats are creatures of habit. A new smell, a new texture, or a bowl that moved across the kitchen can be enough for a cat to walk away from dinner. That does not always mean the food is wrong — it often means the change happened too fast.
Before changing food, it helps to rule out the simple things first: is the bowl clean, is the food served at room temperature rather than straight from the fridge, and has anything else in the house changed recently? If a cat stops eating altogether, loses weight, or seems unwell, that is a vet conversation, not a food-switching experiment.
The 7-day switch that actually works
The mistake most people make is swapping the whole bowl on day one. A gradual mix lets a picky cat get used to the new taste and texture while their stomach adjusts too.
| Day | Old food | New food |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 75% | 25% |
| 3–4 | 50% | 50% |
| 5–6 | 25% | 75% |
| 7 | — | 100% |
- Keep the same bowl, the same spot, and the same feeding times.
- Warm refrigerated wet food briefly to room temperature — cold food smells less appealing.
- Do not add treats, toppers, or a second new food in the same week. If something works, you want to know what it was.
- If your cat refuses a step, stay at that ratio for an extra day or two instead of jumping ahead.
If your cat only licks the gravy
Texture is often the real issue, not flavour. Some cats prefer pâté, some prefer chunks in gravy, and some will only eat shredded meat. When trying a new food, try a different texture before deciding your cat dislikes the whole brand.
This is also where a tasting approach helps: buy a small number of different flavours or textures first, note which ones get finished, and only then stock up on the winner. A cat that finishes one flavour reliably is worth more than a case of a flavour they ignore.
Single-protein options for sensitive cats
For cats with sensitive stomachs, a single-protein (PUR) recipe can make it easier to narrow down what agrees with them. With only one animal protein in the recipe, there are fewer variables if a food does not suit your cat — and it is simpler to explain to your vet what your cat has actually been eating.
GranataPet's PUR range is built around this idea, with grain-free wet food recipes that pair a single protein with the brand's pomegranate formula. If your cat is both picky and sensitive, starting with one PUR flavour and following the 7-day plan above is a sensible first step.
A simple way to choose a first flavour
- Pick one texture your cat has liked before, if you know it.
- Pick one single-protein flavour to start.
- Follow the 7-day mix, and keep notes for a week: what was eaten, what was left, and how their stomach handled it.
- Only change one thing at a time after that.

Picky cats are not trying to be difficult — they just need a slower introduction and a texture they actually enjoy. Give the 7-day switch a fair try before writing a new food off.
